With a second lockdown looming over our heads, we wanted to share a real life story and a letter written to an MP about keeping our gyms open. We fully support this and have included a petition link at the bottom of this post, so you can show your support too.
Following the weekend’s news that a second national lockdown is confirmed, Dean Ellis, Manager at S20 Physique has sent an open letter to MP Clive Betts.
They are appealing for his support to fight the Prime Minsters decision that gyms should again close, citing the low-COVID transmission figures in relation to gyms and the mental health benefits of exercise.
Maintaining exercise and fitness is key to support the NHS, with Health Secretary Matt Hancock explaining: “If everyone who is overweight lost five pounds it could save the NHS over £100m over the next five years.”
Additionally, the Prime Minister has himself acknowledged how important it is not to be overweight, especially given that it increases COVID-19-related risk, and has increased his own exercise levels with the help of a celebrity personal trainer.
This level of financial investment is out of reach for many people, while a gym membership with vital support and equipment is not.
While Mr Johnson has the luxury of choosing Buckingham Palace Gardens for his daily exercise, many of the British public rely on their local gym for their exercise space, especially for those who are based in more urban areas.
Therefore, Dean and his team at S20 Physique feel the decision should be reviewed and overturned, not just for their wellbeing as a business, but for the wellbeing of all their customers and gym-goers across the UK.
